► The Establishment of the Columbia Global Center in Beijing represents a milestone for Columbia University. The Beijing center will serve as a regional base for Columbia’s endeavors in China, enabling our academic community to interact on a local level with students, faculty, and alumni from regions across the globe. Columbia is proud to expand its efforts in China, where our ties are longstanding and deep.
Columbia University’s ties with modern China date back to the 19th Century, when it was among the first American universities to admit Chinese students. Many Chinese attended Columbia and, after graduation, returned to China and became influential statesmen, scientists, philosophers, and educators. The long list of prominent alumni begins with Tang Shao-yi, who entered Columbia in 1880 and later became the first prime minister of the Republic of China in 1912, followed by Wellington Koo, Hu Shih, Tao Xingzhi, Feng Youlan, as well as Xu Guangxian, the most recent recipient of China’s 2008 State Top Scientific and Technological Awards.
Over the past thirty years, Columbia has established extensive academic partnerships with the Chinese academic community, covering a wide range of disciplines including medicine, public health, music, education, law, and business. We take particular pride in the fact that Columbia has educated and hosted tens of thousands of Chinese students and scholars in the last three decades. Currently, Columbia hosts more than 1,200 students and scholars from China, and has the third largest international student population of U.S. universities.
